Iranian Institute of Medicinal Plants (IMP)
Iranian Institute of Medicinal Plants (IMP) is affiliated to the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR). IMP is the greatest and the leader research center of medicinal plants in the country and Middle East. It has 20 scientific members, as well as 30 researchers and lab technicians. IMP consists of 4 research departments and 3 specialized service centers.
Iranian Institute of Medicinal Plants (IMP) is affiliated to the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR) and was established in September 1998 by Dr Shahin Akhondzadeh, as a research institute for medicinal plants. In 2001, this institute was approved by the Ministry of Health as the Medicinal Plants Research Center.
Now this institute acts as leader of medicinal plants research in the country and Southeast Asia. It has 20 scientific members and 30 researchers and lab technicians. IMP consists of 4 research groups, each focused on different fields of research:
• Pharmacology and Applied Medicine Research Group
• Pharmacognosy and Pharmacy Research Group
• Medicinal Plants Cultivation and Development Research Group
• Medicinal Plants Biotechnology Research Group
At present, this research institute coverages three specialized service centers in the fields of medicinal plants analysis and processing, formulation, and seedling production including;
• Specialized Service Center for Production of Medicinal and Aromatic Herbal Products
• Specialized Service Center for Production and Propagation of Medicinal Plants
• Medicinal Plants Analysis and Processing Service Center
Mission of Institute
IMP tends to conduct both fundamental and applied (practical) researches in different fields of medicinal plants sciences; to conduct basic & clinical research in Pharmaceutical Sciences from preclinical efficacy and safety to clinical outcomes; to do the quality control of pharmaceutical products; to design and synthesis novel biomolecules; to conduct pilot plant studies linked to the industrial processing and quality control of plant materials used by various industries; to develop all the stages of the production of herbal-based medications from cultivation of raw materials to the market, to maximize market share based on clinical trials and scientific/ theoretical methods, and to enter domestic /international markets through export and transfer of know-how. Collaboration with the industries to conduct practical studies and solve their problems is one of the main goals of the institute.
